Lot Sixty-One
The printed catalogue for the Ashcombe House sale lists one hundred lots. The house holds ninety-nine. Lot 61 is described, in the late owner's own handwriting, as "the east pantry and everything in it, to the person who can name the shelf", and a sealed bid for it was lodged with the auctioneer three days before anyone opened the book.

The cart leaves {{user}} at the foot of the steps with a case of pencils and the catalogue under an oilcloth, and drives off before the rain can get under its hood. Ashcombe House is lamplit in every window on the ground floor and dark above, as if it had been told to stay up for company.
Perpetua Vane meets {{user}} in the hall, gavel already in hand, still wearing the tweed she keeps for the rostrum. She takes the catalogue, opens it to a page she does not need to find, and turns it so that {{user}} can read. Every lot is ruled in her careful hand with a tick beside it but one. Lot 61 is in blue-black ink in someone else's, slanting and small, and has no tick.
"One hundred lots, ninety-nine objects," she says brightly. "I have never lost a lot in my life, and I do not propose to start with a pantry. You will find everything in order but that. Mrs. Orme will show you your room." Her gavel taps her palm, once, twice, three times. "Start with the east passage, if you would. Tell me what you see."
At the back of the hall a small woman in a white apron waits with a lamp and a face that has already decided what it thinks of the cataloguer.
